What is test management?

  • Test strategy and planning: analyzing the current state of the test processes in the project, department or company, developing an overarching test strategy, creating test plans and defining test objectives, methods and test levels.

  • Test control and monitoring: Control and monitoring of all test activities, both manual and automated, to ensure project progress.

  • Risk management: Proactive identification, assessment and management of quality-related risks throughout the project.

  • Stakeholder management and reporting: Establishing and maintaining communication with all stakeholders, managing expectations and creating meaningful reports on test results and quality status.

  • Defect management: Establishing an efficient process for tracking, analyzing and prioritizing defects and supporting their resolution.

  • Continuous process improvement: Regular analysis of optimization potential in the test process and the introduction of new, value-adding tools and methods.

  • Analysis and quality assurance of requirements: Ensuring the testability and quality of requirements through early analysis and constructive feedback to, for example, product owners, specialist departments and business analysts in order to avoid ambiguities and errors prior to development.

The test management process: a cycle of quality assurance

A professional test management process is less a rigid checklist and more a journey through a cycle that systematically builds up quality.

While the phases build on each other logically, they are permanently accompanied by one process: test monitoring and control.

This continuous control ensures that the project is always on track and that risks are managed at an early stage.

  1. At the beginning of this journey is strategic test planning. This is where the foundation for all future activities is laid. Based on the project objectives and risks, the test manager develops an overarching test strategy, plans the necessary resources and budget and defines how the success of the test activities is to be measured. All of this culminates in the master test plan, a central document that is supported by all key stakeholders.
  2. Based on this plan, the creative and analytical phase begins, in which the abstract requirements are translated into concrete test cases. In the test analysis and test design phase, the test basis - i.e. requirements, user stories or specifications - is first broken down in order to identify the critical conditions to be tested. Test cases are then designed from this. These concepts are then brought to life in the subsequent test implementation: manual test scripts are written out, automated tests are programmed, test data is generated and the test environment is finally set up and configured.
  3. Test execution is the moment of truth. Here, the prepared test cases are systematically executed and the actual results are compared with the expected target results. Every deviation is precisely documented as a potential error (defect) and tracked in the error management process to enable fast and effective rectification.
  4. Each test cycle ends with the test completion. This phase checks whether the previously defined end criteria have been achieved. The results are summarized in a meaningful final test report, which provides management with a well-founded release recommendation. Looking ahead is at least as important: valuable insights for future projects are secured through "lessons learned" and the test process itself is continuously optimized. This ensures that quality is not a product of chance, but the result of a planned and learning approach.
