AI is also finding its way into AI-powered software testing. In regulated industries, the reaction to this is often mixed: interest on the one hand, reluctance on the other. This is understandable. After all, anyone who tests in pharmaceutical companies, medical technology manufacturers or clinical trial organizations has a special responsibility. Traceability, documentation and auditability are not an optional extra, but a duty.
This is precisely why it is worth taking a sober look at the topic. AI also fits into regulated test processes — but not as a black box and not on autopilot. The decisive factor is a well thought-out application that brings together technical control, clear processes and regulatory requirements.
In regulated environments, it is not enough for a test to somehow make sense. It must be comprehensible why a test case was created, on what basis it was prioritized and how a result was achieved. Audit trails, approvals and reliable documentation are part of everyday life.
This also changes the way we look at AI. Not every form of automation is automatically suitable. Anyone wishing to use AI in testing should therefore clarify at an early stage which tasks are to be supported, which data may be used and how results are to be checked and documented. This turns a vague innovation trend into a clearly controllable instrument.
The greatest benefits arise where teams currently invest a lot of time in recurring but demanding tasks. A good example is AI-driven test case generation. AI can analyze requirements, user stories or existing test artefacts and derive initial drafts for test cases — significantly accelerating test coverage planning. This saves time, especially with large specialist processes or extensive product landscapes, and creates a good working basis for technical refinement.
AI also offers potential when it comes to prioritizing regression tests. In regulated projects, test inventories often grow over years. Not every test is equally relevant for every change. AI can help bring together changes, risks and historical error patterns in order to prioritize regressions in a more targeted manner — a key advantage of risk-based testing strategies. This does not replace a test strategy, but it does support well-founded decisions.
A third field of application is the analysis of test results. Large volumes of logs, error messages and test results can be structured and summarized more quickly with AI. Patterns, clusters and possible causes become visible earlier. This relieves the burden on teams, especially when test cycles are tightly scheduled.
There is also the creation of documentation. Here too, AI can provide support — for example in the drafting of test reports, deviation descriptions or management summaries. This is a practical lever, especially in regulated environments where audit readiness and documentation take up a lot of time — as long as it remains clear that approval and traceability responsibility lie with humans.
As useful as AI can be: responsibility cannot be delegated. Especially in regulated industries, human oversight — a core requirement in GxP-compliant environments — is central. Experts must check results, assess plausibility and approve decisions. AI can prepare, accelerate and structure. However, it should not independently decide on quality or readiness for approval.
This is not a disadvantage, but a realistic operating model. If you understand AI as an assistant, you create acceptance and reduce risks. At the same time, the organization remains auditable because responsibilities are clearly defined.
The EU AI Act and industry-specific requirements are often initially seen as an additional hurdle. However, they primarily provide guidance: the EU AI Act classifies AI systems according to risk classes — for regulated industries, this means specific requirements for transparency, AI governance, documented processes and human control with clear roles. Organizations that rely on a risk-based approach are therefore better positioned than those that introduce AI unplanned.
This is precisely where the opportunity lies. Companies and organizations that start now with manageable, well-controlled use cases gain experience, build governance and develop internal trust. Those who wait until everything seems fully developed will lose valuable time.
AI in regulated software testing is no longer a topic for the future. It can already deliver real added value today — provided it is used in a pragmatic, controlled and professionally managed manner. Not despite regulation, but in harmony with it.
