Optimization of test data at a large bank

Industry

Banking

Background

A bank optimized the pseudonymization of test data to ensure regulatory compliance and increase operational efficiency, particularly in view of potential future test outsourcing.

Challenge

The existing pseudonymization processes required auditing and refinement. Key objectives included defining clear responsibilities and making the overall procedure more efficient and transparent.

Performance

Optimized workflows, clarified roles and responsibilities, and standardized status reporting. Orchestrated development activities and ensured the secure deletion of sensitive data, maintained through continuous coordination with application owners and stakeholders.

Benefit

Enhanced data security, a sanitized data environment, and a scalable foundation for future optimizations.

Data is a key success factor for banks as it enables secure transactions, well-founded credit decisions and personalized services. Customer data requires the highest level of protection as it includes sensitive information such as account balances, transaction histories and identification data.

In order to meet regulatory requirements and ensure the highest security standards, the company relies on secure storage, processing and consistent anonymization or generation of synthetic test data. This enables realistic software tests and ensures a stable, secure IT infrastructure. In addition, reliable anonymization enables the efficient relocation of work packages, which optimizes costs in the long term.

Optimized pseudonymization for secure test data

The anonymization and creation of synthetic test data was systematically documented and optimized. Existing processes were reviewed, expanded and adapted to current and future requirements. A comprehensive analysis ensured that all relevant systems were taken into account in order to implement sustainable and scalable solutions in close cooperation with the database developers and application teams. In addition, all relevant AVVs were collected and checked.

Close coordination with the specialist departments enabled open questions about the data structure to be clarified efficiently and implementation to be continuously improved. Existing processes were further developed to ensure complete coverage across different system landscapes.

Data security through structured processes

In addition to improving existing measures, the long-term security of data storage was optimized. Older databases were modernized and adapted to current data protection standards. Data that was no longer required was managed and securely removed in accordance with internal guidelines, making the data structure more efficient and resilient. At the same time, best practices were established to provide a solid foundation for future projects.

A key aspect was the harmonization of different anonymization strategies and the integration of synthetic test data into existing processes. Close cooperation with the specialist departments ensured that all systems meet the highest data protection requirements without restricting test coverage. The focus was on further developing internal compliance standards and optimizing the balance between data protection and operational efficiency.

Sustainably effective result

A key project result was the creation of a comprehensive status overview that documents progress, open tasks and contact persons. This serves as a basis for further optimization and supports the continuous further development of the test environments. The close cooperation of all those involved enabled a successful implementation that ensures the long-term security, efficiency and scalability of anonymization and test data management. At the same time, structures were created that enable the sustainable and economical handling of test data and form the basis for future process improvements.
